A trader earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site last month and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

A bill introduced on the start of the week aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with participants able to predict everything from sports to political events.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
