Administration Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown.
