Elden Ring's Dodge Roll Warrants Praise

If you've played Elden Ring, or nearly any third-person combat game, you're likely familiar with the fantastic technique referred to as the “rolling dodge.” This evasion technique enables your hero to carry out a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to evade incoming harm and gain space from the bad guy. Appears practical, doesn't it?

The dodge roll, though, has attracted plenty of criticism, and not just as a result of the somersault; it's been labeled foolish, a cop-out, and an implausible action — and sometimes, I concur. Just imagine me tumbling about hostile mobs in another popular RPG — can't touch this Geralt! But Elden Ring's rolling dodge is the dodge roll to surpass every other evasion moves, and I'll tell you why.

Regarding this title, the designers identified an excellent method to respond to all views claiming the maneuver is overly simple: merely bestow each opponent unreasonable strength, triple that, and each player character who ventures close them will be eternally grateful thanks to their rolling skill, me included. With so much on the line, successfully rolling to victory comes across as a triumph, rather than a cheap trick.

No different defensive move in the game matches this sense of satisfaction and reliability, since rapid sprints offer limited distance and guard stances are easily broken by powerful foes. One player advised jumping as a go-to game avoidance strategy, but aside from not providing perfect repositioning, I couldn't understand how getting my skull smashed in might boost my prospects of overcoming challenges (inexperience, possibly).

Learning the Move

But even though the dodge roll provides relief in a famously difficult title, it demands ability. First of all, Elden Ring's evasion move only triggers a frame of protection once you let go of the evasion key, which hinders a rapid, fearful withdrawal from perilous circumstances. Furthermore, although it may carry you off from opponents, it's much better to use it as an opportunity to get closer, optimally at their back, and land some hits. Lastly, you still need comprehend and predict enemy attacks, since evading too early of a prolonged preparation could conclude your immunity ahead of the attack striking… resulting in severe damage.

A Harmonious System

Although evasion-rolling in quick succession might seem rather absurd (credit to Geralt once more), this isn't really an option in this title. Certainly, that still doesn't make it a plausible combat move — exactly the reason it would be dreadful to witness it in a title like a historical simulation — yet we're discussing a spectacular magical game under discussion, thus why worry?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, Elden Ring's dodge motion is spruced up with a little somersault-y hop at the commencement, offering a lively impression as opposed to placing the avatar on the floor. Based on your equipment, the maneuver might appear super agile or relatively slow, however, it's consistently faster and more fluid than the evasion moves found in the previous titles. Certainly, you may embed your large weapon on the floor if you're carrying one, but that's on you for avoiding alternative arms (In jest — don't play the game with projectile weapons).

Ideal Equilibrium

The game's dodging mechanic forms an optimal harmony between difficulty and chance, providing prospects of success while endangering that very prospect at the slightest mistake. Perfect this move, and you'll gain not only success, but gratification.
